A Place for Dialogue: Language, Land Use, and Politics in Southern Arizona

A Place for Dialogue: Language, Land Use, and Politics in Southern Arizona

$36.34

In A Place for Dialogue, Sharon McKenzie Stevens views the contradictions and collaborations involved in the management of public land in southern Arizona and by extension the entire arid West through the lens of political rhetoric. Revealing the socioecological relationships among cattlemen and environmentalists as well as developers and recreationists, she analyzes the ways that language shapes landscape by shaping decisions about land use. Stevens focuses on the collaborative Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan initiated by Pima County, Arizona, the ubiquitous use of scientific argument to defend contradictory practices, and the construction and negotiation of rancher/environmentalist identities to illuminate both literally and metaphorically the dynamics of land use politics. Drawing specifically upon extensive interviews with a diverse array of agents on all sides of the debate ranchers, environmentalists, scientists, land managers, government officials on historical narratives, and on her own conflicting experiences as someone who grew up with those who work the western lands, she demonstrates that it is possible to use differences to solve, rather than to aggravate, the entrenched problems that bridge land and language. By integrating her richly textured case study of a fragile region with rhetorical approaches to narrative, science-based argument, and collective identities, Stevens makes a significant contribution to the fields of rhetoric, land management, and cultural studies.

A Photographic Tour of 1916 Prescott, Arizona

A Photographic Tour of 1916 Prescott, Arizona

$53.14

In the spring of 1916, an unknown photographer captured the heart of Prescott, Arizona. For decades the fruits of that labor, a collection of glass plate negatives, lay largely forgotten in the local opera house and theater. Now, an historic western town comes to life as it once was, through images of the town’s business district as found on those photographic plates. Step into a soda fountain, a pool hall, a mercantile, a haberdashery, a saddlery and more, and experience life as it existed in the newly minted state of Arizona in the early twentieth century. This photographic history of Prescott, Arizona, is based upon more than 100 images from the 1916 glass-plate negatives. Complementary images of business advertisements, trade tokens, and streetscapes supplement the main photographs. Richly detailed captions highlight many aspects of the pictures, and the text further explores and describes the town’s historic downtown district, much of which still exists. Maps, a bibliography and an index complete the work.

50 Hikes in Arizona: Walks, Hikes, and Backpacks Through Sky Islands and Deserts in the Grand Canyon State

$11.05

Isn’t Arizona just all desert and cactus? Not really. In fact, Arizona has more topographical and habitat variety than almost any other state in the U.S. With elevations that range from 70 feet near Yuma to 12, 700 feet just outside Flagstaff, Arizona’s great diversity in climate, geology, flora, and fauna will surprise non-Arizonans and residents alike. In a short day’s drive, you can start out in the flat desert dryland and end up in arctic tundra among jagged peaks and you’ll see much more that the state has to offer than just the Grand Canyon. This myth-busting book showcases a select range of short and long trails. Included are hikes where you can find waterfalls, springs, snow, subalpine mountaintops, boreal forests, and watrous canyons. Take the Bright Angel and Rim Trails down the Grand Canyon; visit Native American ruins; hike to summits with jaw-dropping views. And you’ll find the desert trails are hardly barren –they’re alive with saguaro and organ pipe cactus. You can leave inner-city Phoenix and Tucson for hiking treasures you’ll find nowhere else.

The Desert Training Center/California-Arizona Maneuver Area, 1942-1944: Volume 2: Historical and Archaeological Contexts for the Arizona Desert

The Desert Training Center/California-Arizona Maneuver Area, 1942-1944: Volume 2: Historical and Archaeological Contexts for the Arizona Desert

$30.00

The Desert Training Center (DTC) was established in the California desert at the outbreak of World War II as a place to ready troops for the coming invasion of North Africa. It soon expanded to include more than 18, 000 square miles of desert in southern California and southwestern Arizona, and, in 1943, it was renamed the California-Arizona Maneuver Area (C-AMA). It was a massive facility, holding numerous divisional camps of 15, 000 men each, airfields, supply depots, railroad sidings, hospitals, ranges, and maneuver areas. It was also ephemeral, with few permanent structures, and it was entirely abandoned at the end of the war. This report includes a detailed historical context for this unique facility, prepared by military historian Matt C. Bischoff. The historical context is accompanied by descriptions of the remaining property types associated with the DTC/C-AMA and commentary on the significance of these resources. Included are details on the administrative history of the facility, the daily lives of the men stationed there, and the weapons, vehicles, and equipment used. The report is richly illustrated with historical and modern photographs, maps, and drawings, all of which help the reader gain an intimate sense of what took place in this portion of the desert Southwest more than a half century ago.
