When people plan on taking a vacation in Mexico, the first destination that comes to mind is Cancun. It is a beautiful paradise of soothing sea breezes and sprawling white-sand beaches. But it is also a very touristy area with many modern conveniences, five-star resort-hotels, and large shopping areas.

Cancun has become a little version of America and the Mexican culture is trapped in inanimate sculptures and hotel decorations. There must be more to Mexico than what Cancun can offer. In fact, just a few miles beyond Cancun, travelers will find what they are seeking, the coastal strip of natural paradise of the Riviera Maya and the mysteriously romantic walled city of Tulum. There are many Mexico vacation packages for these areas, which offer a robust and natural array of activities for couples, families or the lone traveler.

The Grandeur of Tulum and Riviera Maya

Guarded by the warm tropical sun, the white sand< coastline of the Riviera Maya (alternatively called Mayan Riviera) merges with the Caribbean Sea. The tourists may opt to explore the sea first and have fun with various types of water sports. They will also find the Great Meso-American Barrier Reef, a fragile ecological site where colorful fishes and other aquatic animals continue to thrive. This reef is a diver’s delight. If the tourists are not a diver, then perhaps they can be invited to swim with the dolphins. Believed to be one of the most intelligent mammals living in the ocean, the dolphins appear to be trying to communicate with humans. Are you the one who can create a meeting of minds with them?

Thereafter, the tourists can go inland and explore the ecological reserves of Sian Ka’an, a World Heritage Site that protects Mexico’s unique and endemic flora and fauna. In Sian Ka’an (the phrase means “where the sky is born”), you will begin to believe that you have found the birthplace of paradise.

While in the area, the visitors are encouraged to visit the Xcaret Park. The Xcaret Park is the only one of its kind because it is a small galaxy of attractions that include a Butterfly Pavilion, a Botanical Garden, a Mushroom Farm, a Wild Bird Breeding Aviary, an archaeological Museum, and an authentic Mayan village.

The archaeological museum features scale models of the ancient Mayan culture. But if the visitors wanted the real thing, they can explore further south and find Tulum, a Pre-Columbian walled city where tourists will find one of the most well-preserved Mayan sites. The ruins included the Temple of the Descending God, the Temple of the Frescos, the Temple of the God of the Wind, and more. In the midst of these structures, you can imagine how alive and vibrant it was, thousands of years ago.

As a vacation destination, Mexico has even more to offer than gorgeous coastlines, indulgent food and intriguing archaeological history: world-class spas. Mexico boasts four in Cancun, two in Los Cabos, one in Puerto Vallarta and one in Acapulco. These are four- and five-star spas that are worthy of taking a Mexico spa vacation.

The Spa at Paraiso de la Bonita Resort in Cancun is a five-star, 22,000-square-foot paradise. This is the first spa in Mexico to offer thalasso therapy. This ancient technique rediscovered by contemporary therapists employs freshly heated seawater and marine algae to nurture an exchange of minerals and vitamins to heal and rejuvenate your body.

Cancun’s Maroma Resort & Spa provides a comprehensive offering of massage therapy, facials and full body treatments. You can indulge in these treatments in the delicious privacy of your own room, on your terrace or on a private Palapa beach. Free your mind, body and spirit of tension and toxins at this 4.5-star spa during a Mexico spa vacation.

The JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa is also a 4.5-star spa. Not only can you enjoy the benefits of a range of massage therapy and spa treatments, but you can unwind in the oceanfront pool and whirlpool, be lulled into a nap by the surf on a pristine shore, or exercise at the Health Club.

The Le Meridien Cancun Resort and Spa is a 4.5-star, 15,000-square-foot European spa. Amenities include steam and inhalation rooms, saunas, Jacuzzis, cold plunge pools, Swiss showers and a waterfall whirlpool. If you enjoy this spa during a Mexico spa vacation, fourteen treatment rooms are available to refresh, renew and revitalize your body and soul.

The One and Only Palmilla in Los Cabos is nestled within the unique natural setting of Los Cabos and Mexico’s architectural and artistic heritage. Thirteen private spa treatment villas provide the utmost in complete sanctuary for your Mexico spa vacation. The villas accommodate one or two people, providing the optimum indoor or outdoor atmosphere. This is a five-star resort.

Los Cabos is also home to Las Ventanas al Paraiso, another five-star spa. An extensive range of services include restorative treatments, holistic therapies, healing rituals, organic products and remedies native to Baja. The beautiful secluded desert garden setting will enhance your Mexico spa vacation relaxation and vitality.

The Four Seasons Resort, Punta Mita, is a five-star, 14,000-square-foot resort in Puerto Vallarta. “Punta Mita” translates as “resting place” in Spanish. The Apuane spa at Four Seasons provides myriad massage and spa treatments designed to detoxify, relax and heal your being. This includes the Punta Mita massage, which utilizes indigenous sage oil and tequila.

The four-star Fairmont Acapulco Princess spa spans 14,000 square feet, which is graced by a palapa, or thatched roof to pepper your Mexico spa vacation with a taste of authenticity. Nestled within the palapa are hydrotherapy rooms, couples massage suites, Jacuzzis, steam and sauna multi-use rooms, suites, and even a fitness center.

These spas are definitely worthy of a visit the next time you head south of the border on a Mexico spa vacation!

If you are looking for summer things to do outside the United States, Mexico is just there waiting for you. Mexico is a very lively country with a multi-ethnic society of Spanish, Native American and American traditions. This ethnic diversity is very much reflected on the country’s culture and food, and here are two places in Mexico that greatly illustrates the fact:

Ensenada
Ensanada is located in the Mexican state of Baja California and is just 84 miles south of San Diego. From San Diego, you can join an Ensenada Day Tour, which is a great way to start your summer vacation. The tour gives a very warm introduction to the things to do in Ensenada and its Spanish atmosphere with its alluring shops and authentic restaurants. Learn more about the people’s culture and heritage at the Cultural Center of Ensenada and find out how they are greatly influenced by the Spaniards.

Join Ensenada resident and other visitors at the Ensenada Summer Wine Festival for some wine tasting. The festival is an annual international event that is taking place on the first ten days of August this year! Aside from the regular wine tasting event, the festival also holds a paella cooking contest, a gala dinner and a sunset musical performance. If you wish to experience the wine in Ensenada with a relatively smaller crowd, you can also go to Bodegas De Santo Tomas. It is Baja California’s oldest winery, and still conducts demonstrations of wine-making traditions. Bodega De Santo Tomas also offers samples of wines from their vineyard as well as samples of their bread and cheese.

A visit to a new place always includes shopping for souvenirs or memorabilia that you would want to bring home to remember the summer vacation by. Avenida Lopez Mateos is Ensenada’s main shopping street lined with retail stores selling everything that shouts a genuine Mexican identity, such as straw hats and wood carvings. If you are looking for something more refined, Avenida Ruiz is the place to go. It is the stretch where you will find the more polished shops and cafes.

There are so many dining options to choose from in Ensenada. One of the most popular ones is the oldest cantina in Baja California, Hussong’s Cantina. Dating back to the late 1800’s, Hussong’s Cantina was the hang out of some of the world’s literary geniuses and is said to have been the place where Margaritas originated.

Oaxaca

The province of Oaxaca is located in the southern part of Mexico and is named after its largest city. The best thing to do to get to know the city is to visit Plaza de la Constitucion de Oaxaca, more popularly known as Zocalo. The plaza has been the heart of Oaxaca for over 500 years. Surrounded by stores, the dominating feature of Zocalo is the very grand old Cathedral that dates back to the 18th century.

Seasons Of My Heart proudly offers and extraordinary Culinary Cultural Travels, and Mexican Cuisine Events and Oaxacan Food Holidays. This is great for those who love to cook, want to learn how to cook or those who simply enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. They have tours available almost the entire year, with recipes and menus appropriate for each season.

Visit the world-renowned archaeological site of Milta, combining both Zapotec and Mixtec structures, the San Pablo Villa de Milta. It is among the constant in every visitor’s things to do in Mexico list. The ancient ruins are just so inviting.

Looking for accommodations in Oaxaca is a walk in the park as there are very many lodging options to choose from. Hostels like the Casa de Don Pablo Hostel have very affordable nightly rates, making you enjoy more of the numerous summer things to do in Mexico.

Readers love to write to contradict my too-often made point of American prices versus Mexican prices in Mexico. They will disagree with me by saying, “Well, I’ve never seen any indication of a dual price gouging therefore it can’t exist.” Lovely bit of logic, don’t you agree?

What might be going on is further proof of the Bubble Theory of Expatriation that I’ve been reading from my favorite ethnographer. Actually, it is the Mexicans who live in communities that support the gringo colonies who suggest the Bubble Theory. This theory is really very easy. It goes something like this:

“To learn about a culture is best accomplished by living in the culture as do the locals (in this case Mexicans) in that culture.”

If you notice, in any area where there is a gringo enclave, you will not see Mexicans living within the gringo enclaves. So, if you want to learn the culture, perhaps you should get the point that you will have to live in the culture as do the Mexicans you claim to know and whom you claim: “they love us here.”

See? It’s easy. Live in the culture!

One thing that those Gringos who are Bubble-Dwellers will miss out on is the salient fact that there are two prices. One is the gringo price and one is the Mexican price. If you live in The Bubble you will never, ever, in your expat career know this. You will miss it.

My long-time expat friend, “EH”, who has lived in Mexico for more than thirty years, told the contractor she hired to fix up the rural house she bought: “I want Mexican prices on everything.”

Why do you suppose she asked that?

When a mutual Mexicana friend of mine and “EH”’s heard who she hired to be her contractor, she immediately went to “EH” and told her to hire someone else who would give her the Mexican prices.

Why do you suppose she did that?

When the wife and I told the son, a good friend, of a real estate baroness in Guanajuato that we were moving to another city, he told us, “Be sure you let the owners of the potential home you rent that you are artists (we’re writers) and not wealthy retiree Americans coming to live in that city.”

Why do you suppose he told us that?

Those Gringos who live inside The Bubble, the artificial colonies, will never be able to know to the degree they are being charged the American prices for everything under the sun.

Right now, where we are living, we are being charged about fifty bucks more than what a Mexican would be charged. Why’s that?

We are Americans. It is assumed we are all filthy rich. Think about that when planning your retirement to Mexico and if you can (or want) to afford the pricing discrimination that is a daily affair here.
