Life As A Stay At Home Mom

I started on this journey 4 1/2 years ago. I was 7 months pregnant and my mother in law mentioned to my husband that we should consider what I would really be bringing home income wise after the cost of daycare. When we first realized after the cost of working, I was not bringing anything home really, we knew I was not going to go back to work after Nyssa arrived. However the whole concept of not working did not really sink in until it happened. I left my job early because of the complications of just being pregnant. It was not until Nyssa arrived that I realized I did not want to even consider going back to work.

From that point on I was sure of a lot of things including that I was going to home school her. I have since learned that things do not always go as you plan. I am not back to work in a real out of home job. However Nyssa has insisted in her infinite glory that she wants to go to a real school. I have realized everything happens for a reason. She does attend a true preschool in the mornings. She loves preschool and I can not imagine keeping that her from that experience. However if I realize that if that was something she did not want, I would not push her on the issue either. She will probably end up in a well picked private school once she is ready for Kindy. If we were to have a second child and that child was the complete opposite I would be more than happy to home school the second child. I do believe that you must do what it is right for each child based upon their needs.

My days start with dropping her off at preschool. While she is in preschool I clean the house or I run errands. After I pick her up from preschool we go home. She takes a nap if she needs one. When she wakes up we watch PBS, play computer games, or work in the garden. Sometimes we go for walks in the yard. While I previously could never imagine life with her in school, I can now see where her going to school makes life better for everyone in our house. Our time together is more enjoyable. Most especially since I am not dragging her on errands and she gets a bit of kid interaction every day.

In the evenings we often take care of the family fish tanks. This has been one of the great hobbies that I have picked up in the last 4 years. I check the water quality and do water changes if needed. Nyssa feeds the fish and checks for new baby fish in the tanks. Then we sit and watch or talk to the fish for a little. Yes I promise you they do hear us. It is not at all like talking to plants. Nyssa keeps Swordtails. Dh keeps killifish and apple snails. I like just about anything with fins. It is a very relaxing hobby. Besides the fish we also have 3 dwarf hamsters and 3 guinea pigs.

Every time I think life is getting to a pattern it changes. I never thought my husband would ever let me keep pets. Now we have a whole house full. I always thought Nyssa would be home schooled, yet she prefers to go to preschool. We have moved cross country twice in the last 2 years. My husband has gone from being a tech support person to developing software for embedded systems. The life of a stay at home mom is in now way dull and by nature encourages your family to move forward. I think it was the best thing to have ever happened to our family.
